Is Surrogacy legal?

Our Surrogacy Assistance Team only works with clinics in countries where Surrogacy is fully legal and intended parents will have no legal complications post birth. In Greece, according to the ΦΕΚ B’ 5524/26.10.2022 decision, Gestational Surrogacy is fully legal, including financial compensation for the Surrogate.

Only in the UK is a parental order required upon return of the parents with the child, regardless of the birth country. Regarding Greece, parents from the USA will require an appointment at the embassy post-birth, which can require an additional stay of 2 weeks to a month.

Do I have to find my own Surrogate Mother?

No, clinics will assist you with such a matter. While of course there is the option of bringing your own surrogate mother, most clinics can arrange a suitable one for you.

Do I have to meet my Surrogate Mother?

In Greece, you have the option of not meeting the surrogate Mother at any point throughout the pregnancy. However, you can also opt to meet her at the signing of the contract prior to commencing any treatment, as well as coming into the bimonthly pregnancy screenings.

Does the Surrogate Mother bond with the child?

No, the Surrogate Mother does not experience any attachment to the child. In gestational surrogacy, the preferred method, the mother does not have any biological relation to the child, functioning as a carrier for the intended parents. As Surrogates are usually compensated for their pregnancy, and there are contracts in place to protect the intended parents and the child, 

Can we take the baby home immediately after birth?

In Greece, the Surrogate and the child remain at a private clinic, separately from each other, for 4 days after the birth of the child. It is good for intended parents to calculate around a 10 day stay around the birth, from a day before the child is scheduled to be delivered, until a few days after the child’s exit from the hospital. US patients choosing Greece may have a different experience, to be discussed in the consultation.

How much time does surrogacy take?

Considering initial consultations, possible wait times and external delays, it is important to consider that surrogacy is a binding, time-consuming process. It can take anywhere from a year to 2 years even, depending on your situation and your country and clinic of choice.

If I live abroad, how much time do I have to spend in the birth country?

In Greece, if you are using donor eggs, you are required to visit 2 times; once to sign the contract and once for the birth of the child. An additional 10 day stay should be calculated for the birth of the child. If you are using your own oocytes, an additional stay will be required for the treatment and oocyte collection of the intended mother.

Are there requirements for potential Surrogate Mothers?

Yes, there are strict requirements for women who want to become Surrogate Mothers. They need to be over the age of 25, and most centers require that these women have at least 1 child of their own prior to commencing their role as surrogate. Aside from these, there are legal, social, physical and psychological screenings that each potential surrogate needs to complete in order to qualify.
